Fading to Light

Marianne Goebl took over her position as the director of Design Miami/ and Design Miami/ Basel in early 2011 and replaced the founding director Ambra Medda. Before her engagement for the most prominent and substantive forum for international design, she occupied several major positions at furniture brand Vitra.

Goebl has her origins in Austria where she got also her Master’s Degree in International Management. Her well-founded knowledge in the design field is based on several years of experience which includes her work for 'Vitra Edition' alongside world-renowned designers like Ron Arad, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Konstantin Grcic, Hella Jongerius, and Jasper Morrison, among others.

“Our goal here at Design Miami/ is to take the visitor on a journey through out the entire design history,” says Goebl. Through her position as the director she is able to have access to incredible materials, the most interesting beautiful objects of design history and to the people who are involved in this field.

The installation 'You Fade To Light' designed by design studio rAndom International is one object that Goebl points out to be very pioneering because of its completely new engagement with the user. “It’s not the user, who is the active part but it’s the piece that reaches out to the user.”
The large wall piece consists of multiple mirrors whereby the viewer can create a unique dialogue between themselves and their mirror image by turning the movement into light.

Hannes Koch is one of three directors of the Studio rAndom International, and explains that, by using a new lighting technology called OLED (organic-light-emitting-diode), the user gets an abstract representation of him/herself. The installation animates people to interact with it in a new and unexpected way.” It’s definitely something different,” says Koch “you don’t do that. People don’t dance in front of a furniture”.
