Creating a Need
Make-up artist Thorsten Weiss has worked his way up to the top. Starting out as a hairdresser in Cologne, Germany, he nowadays collaborates with internationally known photographers, designers and artist like Jürgen Teller, Spike Jonze, Nick Knight, Björk and Jonathan Meese – just to name a few. “It’s not a certain kind of make-up I’m applying,” he says about his work, “what I’m trying to do is to bring simplicity into something complex.” Besides his work on photo productions, Thorsten also holds the position as beauty director of digital platform 'Fly16x9', where, as a producer, he transports the contents of a highly aesthetic magazine into motion pictures.
From Thorsten’s point of view someone truly avant-garde is accessory designer Jacques le Corre, a dear friend who passed away last year. The Paris-based designer was most noted for his hat creations, especially his signature piece, the Luxury Tramp Hat. What strikes Thorsten more about his oeuvre, were the images he created. “His personal will was to create avant-garde in pictures,” he says “without hesitation to take the next step as a photographer. Even after his death he will always bring me to a point of thinking over things and trying to see things in a different light.”
