An Artful Disguise
In the birthplace of the Dada art movement, the 'Cabaret Voltaire' in Zürich, Switzerland, we got to meet Philipp Meier who is the director there. Although Philipp was initially opposed to the current incarnation of the Cabaret Voltaire, he became interested in the concept of it.
Intrigued by the aspect of contradiction between Dada and the institutionalization of such a free form of art, he accepted his role as director of the Cabaret Voltaire in 2003.Incessantly rethinking what “Dada might be in the present day, and how Dadaists would make art today” he is always on the outlook for artists as well as cultural phenomena that relate to 'Dadaism'. What occupies him most, however, are the projects that take place outside of the 'Cabaret Voltaire'.Such a project is presented in this video, in which he introduces the figure MacGhillie, a camouflage suit brought to life by artists, activists and common people.
Through the reactions of passers-by who are unaccustomed to be confronted with something they cannot categorize, MacGhillie involuntarily becomes an object that amuses, disturbs and irritates.
