Berlin-based fashion label 'Starstyling' plays by its own rules. Instead of focusing on trends or referring to what the big players of the fashion industry do, founders Kai Seifried and Katja Schlegel have their very own approach. “Our style derives from a consequent attitude of not considering fashion as pieces of clothing but as pictures, emergences that are being fashioned,” designer Katja Schlegel explains. The results are experimental, colorful, and vibrant clothes that are popular among the Berlin party crowd and international celebrities in search of stage outfits alike.
Equally unique is Katja’s view on avant-garde: “It’s about having no other choice. It’s an urge that leads those people somewhere, to a place where they are the first.” Two people, who are avant-garde in her eyes because they can’t help it, are gallery owners Sven Oliver Ahrens and Bernd Hammelehle. The two joined forces and moved from Stuttgart to Cologne and represent artists like Tim Berresheim, Markus Oehlen and Stephan Jung. Their approach is to run a gallery for artists, instead of focusing on the business side. “Artists, who work in a serious manner don’t try to serve the market,” Bernd Hammelehle explains. “When artist Matthias Schaufler, who we represent, has an exhibition that sells well, it is a reason for him to rethink his work principles.”
