Pinning Modeselektor down is no easy task. The duo of Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary are usually playing a tight schedule of gigs throughout Europe and are about as energetic as their mind-blowing shows usually are. Between their arrival to London and soundcheck, we managed to sit them down and get a few minutes of their attention in order to ask about their view on the avant-garde. “Today, avant-garde is a very blurred term,” Sebastian says. “This is due to the mischief that was done to it in the twentieth century. The term’s current connotation probably reflects something completely different.” Avant-garde or not, the show that night at the London HMV Forum was packed. The two Berliners, who are said to be Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke’s favorite band, have been performing music since 1996 and have been involved in several collaborations such as Moderat (Modeselektor together with Apparat) and Pfadselektor (Pfadfinderei and Modeselektor).
