Tourist in Your Own Neighbourhood

Explaining what Billy Rennekamp does is not easy; his simultaneous projects range from programming to art performances. “I consider myself an eternal intern,” he says. Billy has volunteered for three different artists and three different institutions in three different cities over the last three years (which seems like an art concept in itself). “I admire the work of these entities and happily donate my time and energy to their causes," he says. "I understand that coordinated efforts produce the most successful results.” Besides working for others artists, he is part of many collectives – online and offline – including Loshadka.org, HandEyeCoordination.org, IndexofPotential.net, and has participated in collaborative exhibitions with artists Anne De Vries, Skye Chamberlain, and Britta Thie. Another one of his endevours involved setting up the Chinatown office of the online magazine Dis, a space which was conceived by artist Lizzy Fitch. The concept of Dis is as hard to explain as Billy’s profession, mainly because unlike other rags, it does not distinguish between disciplines or conform to orthodox aesthetic value systems. This kind of otherness is exactly what drew Billy’s interest. “It feels weird, but you still want to pursue figuring out why you can’t stop thinking about it," he says. "It’s avant-garde, it’s uncomfortable, it’s ahead of something.”
