Farewell to Summer
17 October 2012
When The Avant/Garde Diaries asked Mikey DeTemple if he wanted to make a short surf film with friend and frequent collaborator Kassia Meador, all he asked from us was a time to show up. As for the place, there wasn’t any question. We’d spoken to Kassia a week before, and she was already there – in a sleepy fishing town called Montauk on the far eastern tip of Long Island. Long known as the best place to grab swell in a state known for finicky breaks, Montauk holds a special place in many surfer’s hearts. Born and raised not far away in Babylon, Mikey spent his summers there, learning all the things he eventually put to good use after going pro at sixteen. While these days he mostly concentrates on surfing with friends and shooting beautiful movies for High Seas Films, Kassia still rides professionally. Like Mikey, she went pro as a teen (after learning to ride the hallowed tubes of Malibu). She is sponsored by Roxy and is currently ranked No. 2 best female longboarder in the world. And because we shot this video on the heels of New York Fashion Week, we couldn’t resist outfitting our two favorite surfers in evening wear by Danish design superhero Henrik Vibskov. Just don't tell anyone Mikey tore the suit after his first ride.
