Something Out of Nothing

8 August 2011

DJ, producer, and label owner Helmut Geier, a.k.a. DJ Hell, has been spinning records since the early '80s, which makes up more than half of his life. In order to keep “the machine going and fresh,” as he says, Hell is always searching for new bright lights to collaborate with. “Every year I step out of the system to watch myself," he says. "Just reflecting on what has happened and figuring out how I’m going to change it for the next half year to keep it innovative and interesting for myself. So far it has worked for more than thirty years.” He found his latest discovery, performance artist Voin de Voin, on the Internet. The Bulgaria-born former dancer chose to work independently in order to pursue his artistic interests uncompromisingly. Meanwhile his videos got him banned from FaceBook and YouTube. Together with DJ Hell, we visited Voin’s studio in the Berlin neighborhood of Kreuzberg.
