The Avant/Garde Diaries Project Space: Erik Madigan Heck

For the past three years, the 29-year-old photographer Erik Madigan Heck has been quietly composing a series of idiosyncratic and seductive Kodak Super-8 short films that combine fashion and music. Collaborating with designers like Ann Demeulemeester and A.F. Vandevorst, with music by Arvo Pärt and Marsen Jules, these aren’t your typical glammy or voguishly washed-out fashion spots. Heck’s world is moody, delicate, elusive, and alluring.

For one week beginning September 6, 2012, The Avant/Garde Diaries is extremely pleased to present a public screening of these works for the very first time. Projected onto panels in the floor-to-ceiling windows of our downtown NYC project space, the short films are experimental juxtapositions of fashion design, melody, and rhythm. The series includes work spanning from a 2009 collaboration with Ann Demeulmeester to another with A.F. Vandevorst where Heck commissioned a quartet of cellists to rearrange an Arvo Pärt composition while wearing the designer’s collection. We are thrilled have Erik Madigan Heck contribute to The Avant/Garde Dairies continuing mission to share our project space as a hive for creative exchange and cross-disciplinary innovation.

Heck earned his MFA in Photography and Film Related Studies from Parsons School of Design in New York, where he currently lives and works. He is a guest lecturer at the School of Visual Arts and creative director of the art journal Nomenus Quarterly. Heck’s photography frequently appears in the New Yorker, New York Times, Wired, and Newsweek, and he was recently named the youngest photographer to shoot Neiman Marcus’ “Art of Fashion” campaign.
